Overnight Oats With Almond Milk or Good Hemp Milk

Well, this is a first for The Cheeky Vegan! The good folks at Braham & Murray Ltd (GOOD Hemp) have been kind enough to ply me with a number of their goods with the sole purpose of reviewing them and featuring them on here. So guess what we’re doing today!

I received three very scrummy looking products from them: Hemp milk, Hemp oil and Hemp seeds flavored with Asian Spices:

Since I can think of many many different uses for these three products, you’re about to see this space get very hemp, very soon. However, in the meantime, I’m going to break down these reviews into three separate posts, so that each ingredient may shine like a star without being overshadowed by its siblings. Aren’t I considerate?

So for this week, I’m diving straight into the Hemp milk, because that is precisely what I did once I opened the box. Yes, I got very excited. But you can use almond milk instead of hemp milk.

As a drink on its own, it’s delicious and provides an excellent alternative to soya, oat and nut milk, which many people may be allergic to. Not to say that 0% of people may have an allergy, just to say that it’s not one of the big ones, so if you’re looking for dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free and gluten-free milk, you’ve come to the right place.

Not only is this milk allergy-friendly, but oh my gosh, does it contain some great stuff or what?!

As vegans, we’re always on the prowl for animal-free sources of omega-3 and protein, and by the holy face of Luca, this stuff has it all.

The Healthy Tips : Overnight Oats With Almond Milk or Good Hemp Milk

For optimal health, the body needs the perfect balance of the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, benefitting the skin, the nervous system, the brain, the heart, the immune system and the production of energy. Hemp seeds contain this perfect balance of fatty acids, and therefore all the benefits that come with them.

In addition to this, they are a brilliant plant-based source of high-quality protein and, unlike soy, hemp seeds do not contain enzyme inhibitors and phytates, meaning that the body can quickly absorb the nutrients. They also include all the essential amino acids which are needed to maintain a healthy body. Amino acids are frequently referred to as the ‘building blocks’ of protein, and for a good reason.

So if you weren’t already convinced of the health benefits of consuming hemp in its varying forms, you should be by now. Whether you’re a working mum with no time to yourself in the mornings, or you’re retired and like to spend a leisurely morning watering your petunias and sipping coffee while tucking into a book (god, I envy you). This breakfast will work for you. The only requirement is that you like oats. That is all.

Of course, this can be made gluten-free by using gluten-free oats.

Another ‘of course’ that needs to be acknowledged here: I’m very aware that I’m a bit of a latecomer when it comes to this phenomenon. I’m sure many of you will have already tried this in some form or another, but hey, humor me. It’s new to me, it’s exciting, it’s healthy, and it’s incredibly convenient. As a person who struggles to get up in the morning, and who cycles 5 miles into work before even thinking of breakfast, this is the perfect morning treat for me.

Ingredients

¼ cup rolled oats
1 tbsp chia seeds
2 tbsp Harvest Morn milled linseed
½ cup GOOD Hemp Milk
One small banana, sliced
1 tbsp Sweet Freedom or equivalent
A sprinkling of pumpkin seeds

Method

Combine the first four ingredients in the container of your choice and give them a good stir. Leave in the fridge overnight.

In the morning, slice your banana and add to the container, along with your preferred sweetening syrup (optional) and a sprinkling of pumpkin seeds.

With the hemp milk, milled linseed and chia seeds, this breakfast is jam-packed full of omega three fatty acids as well as a good boost of protein to keep you satiated all morning. The great thing is if you’re as time-deprived in the morning as I am, you can just grab your jar and go (and take the toppings with you!).

Finally (and it goes without saying, really) as with many of my recipes, you can just treat this as a template. Use whatever fruit, seeds and nuts you want for the topping, and nothing stops you from mixing a teaspoon of cocoa powder into the mix, for a lovely chocolatey breakfast treat!
